HOW TO MAKE URBAN ART SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE

Dr. Christoph Tornow – the series host and himself a curator – is a former sprayer and hip-hop fan who today is a practising eye surgeon. He founded his first gallery, the Vicious Gallery on Hamburg‘s Reeperbahn, in 2006 and is now owner of the Golden Hands Gallery in Hamburg. He’s considered an established and well-connected connoisseur of the scene, and is convinced that urban art, post-graffiti and street art are the future of contemporary art.

Christoph meets the hottest artists in the most prominent cities within the urban art scene, and plays a part in the creation of artworks, establishing close personal ties with all involved. He also chats with other gallery owners about how urban art is developing. We show that while the art has its origins on the street, not every piece found on the street can be considered art.

It’s always been – and still is – tough for artists to reach the top. All the more impressive, then, is the path to success of the few who make it to the top galleries.
